The Missouri Valley College softball team banged out 23 hits and allowed only six Monday for its first doubleheader sweep of the season, a 15-1, 6-0 non-conference set against visiting St. Mary (Kan.).
Both junior Kim Lopez and senior Janie Jungermann tossed three hitters, the latter's first shutout of the season and 11th of her career.
The Lady Vikings broke open a 1-0 first game with sophomore Hannah Garczynski's three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. They then made sure of an early exit with a season-best 10 runs the next frame.
Valley had eight hits during the spree, including junior Mallory White's three-run double. Junior Jennifer Palmatory tripled in two runs, with two more scoring on Garczynski's double.
Palmatory doubled in the second inning to plate the first run of the nightcap. Garczynski and White had RBI singles during the Lady Vikings' three-run third and a single by junior Esperanza Espinoza and bases-loaded walk produced two runs in the fourth.
Junior Lani Masoner led the Spires (1-9) with two hits for the day.
Valley (7-9) opens Heart of America Conference play at home today against Avila.
