Dohrman passes 1,000-point mark in 'Hounds' win

SWEET SPRINGS -- The Sweet Springs boys' basketball team is on a roll, winning for the fourth time in five games Tuesday with a 66-39 non-conference decision against visiting Kingsville.

Senior Colby Dohrman passed the 1,000 career point mark with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Greyhounds, who blew out to an 18-5 first-quarter lead and extended the margin to 22 points by halftime -- coming off Friday's 71-30 rout of winless Orrick in their I-70 Conference finale.

The Tigers (6-15) got 15 points from senior Brandon Spainhour.

Sophomore Jeffery Hall knocked down four three-pointers to top Sweet Springs (16-8) with 19 points. The 'Hounds close out the regular season at home Thursday against Northwest.

Marceline 51, Slater 34

SLATER -- Slater gave Lewis and Clark Conference foe Marceline a hard time in the early stages of Tuesday's regular season finale, but the visitors pulled away over the next two periods for a 51-34 win.

Senior Dylan Clubine made three shots as the Tigers increased their one-point lead with a 20-9 second quarter, with junior Brennen Floray's seven points keying a 14-6 third frame.

Floray and junior Chase Hilsabeck led Marceline (14-10, 5-4 L&C) with 14 points apiece.

The Wildcats (3-20, 1-9) got eight points each from sophomores Tyler Buglovsky and Drew Weiker. Slater is seeded eighth in the Class 2, District 7 Tournament at Sturgeon, and will open play Tuesday against the state's top-ranked team: league champion Salisbury.

Southwest 55, Malta Bend 40

LUDLOW -- Senior Justin Lewis' 14 points helped Southwest of Ludlow take a 55-40 non-conference home decision Tuesday against Malta Bend.

The Wildcats (16-6) added to an eight-point halftime lead with an 11-5 third period. They got 11 points each from sophomores Ethan Crowe and Brandon Bothwell.

Freshman Jared Armstrong had a game-high 15 points for the Tigers, with junior David Hostetter contributing 11 points. Malta Bend (3-18) closes out the regular season Thursday with a CCAA home contest against Otterville.


Sweet Springs 46, Kingsville 42

SWEET SPRINGS -- The Sweet Springs girls bounced back from last week's loss to Orrick, snapping a five-game win streak, with a 46-42 non-conference home win Tuesday over Kingsville.

Senior Brittany Higgins scored 23 points for the Lady Greyhounds, who rallied from a three-point deficit with a 13-6 fourth quarter -- senior Lauren Fuehring providing a critical bucket in the comeback.

Freshman Kelsey Herring topped the Lady Tigers (13-10) with 17 points.

Sweet Springs (11-13) also got nine points and 11 rebounds from sophomore Christina Higgins.

Marceline 54, Slater 33

SLATER -- Junior Kendra Gladbach scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter Tuesday, Marceline getting off to a 19-7 start and coasting to a 54-33 Lewis and Clark Conference win at Slater.

Junior Madison McCormick also racked up 20 points for the Lady Tigers (13-11, 5-4 L&C).

The Lady Wildcats got 11 points and 13 rebounds from sophomore Mary Rose Gonzalez, with senior Kaylee Holt adding 10 points. Slater (7-18, 1-9) is the seventh seed in the Class 2, District 7 Tournament, which it starts Monday against league champion Salisbury.
