SPRINGFIELD -- The Missouri Valley College men's and women's basketball teams returned to Heart of America Conference action Thursday by losing both ends of a doubleheader at Evangel.
The Vikings trailed the 14th-ranked men's club in NAIA Division I by only three points at halftime, but was held to seven points in first 12 minutes of the second half during a 74-60 loss. The Crusaders out-shot Valley 45 to 39 percent from the field and benefited from a 42-29 edge on the boards.
Senior Cale Ramsey scored a career-high 21 points and junior Stephen Cotten had 18 points for Evangel (12-4, 4-0 HAAC).
The Vikings (5-9, 1-2) were led by 17 points each from junior Michael Connor and freshman Jordan Stapp.
Junior Kristen Link scored nine points during the second half, the margin of difference during the period for the Lady Crusaders, for a 57-46 victory over the Valley women.
Senior Kara Blankenship recorded her eighth career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds for Evangel (5-8, 3-1), which controlled the glass by a 43-35 margin.
The Lady Vikings (5-8, 1-2) were led by freshman Chelsey Merrigan's 14 points.
Valley will host Peru State in a HAAC twinbill Saturday.
