Joseph Lawrence Thomas, 73, of Grandview, passed away Dec. 31, 2011.
Visitation was from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. at McGilley and George Funeral Home in Grandview. Born July 5, 1938, in Marshall, he was the son of the late Joseph and Juanita Thomas Thomas. He graduated from Slater High School. He was an Army veteran, serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He lived in Slater and worked for the railroad. On Nov. 27, 1965, he married Elizabeth Gieringer, who survives of the home, and was a member of Slater First Baptist Church. They moved to the Kansas City area in 1968. He worked as a carpenter and was a member of Carpenters Union Local 777 in Harrisonville. After moving to the Lake of the Ozarks in 1977 he moved back to Kansas City in 1991 and worked as a carpenter until 1998. He then went to work for Shawnee Mission Schools as a facilities manager for two years. He worked at Sam's Club for seven years until his health began to fail in 2010.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Thomas and his wife, Barbara Ann, of Frederick Md., and their children, Samantha and Joe Mac Thomas; one daughter, Kristina Davis and her husband, Steve, of Parker, Colo., and their children, Megan and Jack; sisters, Juanita Jo Epperson of Clarkston Wash., and Patricia Grigsby of Vicksburg, Miss.; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Mac Thomas and one sister, Kathleen Smith.
