Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at Lutheran High School North, 5401 Lucas-Hunt Road, in St. Louis. A luncheon and visitation will be held with family after the service. Private burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Lutheran High School North Scholarship Fund, 5401 Lucas-Hunt Road, St. Louis MO 63121. Born Jan. 5, 1927, in Mt. Leonard, he was the son of William and Lillie Vogelsmeier. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mt. Leonard and was raised on a farm north of Sweet Springs. He graduated from Malta Bend High School in 1944 and enrolled at Valparaiso University. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and served in the Army Occupation forces in Japan until his discharge in December 1946. He returned to Valparaiso University and graduated in 1950. On Aug. 11, 1951, he married Lois Althaus, who preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 2011. He began teaching at Grace Lutheran School in Wellston. He taught fourth grade, coached and worked with youth. He later taught at Lutheran High School Central, which became Lutheran High School North, until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by three children, Lori Christiansen, Gregg Vogelsmeier and Stuart Vogelsmeier; four grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Straight of Concordia.
