LEBANON, Ill. -- The Missouri Valley College women's basketball team controlled overtime by an 11-3 margin Monday to avenge an early-season loss with a 72-64 non-conference victory at McKendree (Ill.).
The Lady Vikings had lost by nine points during the Central Methodist Classic on Nov. 4, and were trailing by seven points five minutes into the second half. However, a three-pointer by sophomore Ashley Troyer started a 14-4 run capped by her lay-up with 9:35 remaining.
Valley led by four points after junior Ashley Maxwell got inside with 1:17 left, but junior Leann Voss connected from outside for the Lady Bearcats and -- after an exchange of turnovers and missed MVC free throw -- freshman Caty Ponce tied the game from the charity stripe with three seconds to go.
Maxwell nailed a short jumper to begin the extra period and Troyer followed with an inside bucket and set up freshman Samantha Kixmiller on the fast break. Sophomore Brittany Willis scored to cut the margin to three points with 2:39 left, but McKendree was blanked the rest of the way.
Ponce had 16 points and four assists to lead the Lady 'Cats (6-7).
Troyer's 17 points and Maxwell's 16 paced the Lady Vikings (4-6), who shot 54.2 percent from the field during the second half to erase a six-point halftime deficit. Their 47.2 field-goal shooting percentage was a season best.
Valley will play Saturday at Missouri Baptist.
