Ralph Connor Walling, 89, of Springfield, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, in Cox Medical Center South.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, in Walnut Lawn Funeral Home with Hosea Bilyeu officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff and friends at Culpepper Place, Brookhaven, Cox South Staff and Doctors for every special kindness.

Born July 9, 1922, he was the son of James and Sarah (Mingus) Walling. He graduated from Hartville High School and attended Missouri State Teachers College. On May 13, 1944, he married Effie "Doe" Coday, who preceded him in death. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944. In 1951 he was employed by Kraft Foods until his retirement. He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1944. He was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and the organist there for many years.

Survivors include two sons, David Walling and his wife, Vicky, and Paul Walling and Becky Ball, all of Springfield; daughter-in-law, Sharon Walling of Springfield; grandchildren, Jeremy Walling and his wife, Breanna, of Cape Girardeau, Katie Henney and her husband Jack, of Columbia and Max Walling of Springfield; great-grandchildren, Jefferson and Benjamin; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, James Coday Walling.
