Grant application deadline looms for tourism funds

Thursday, October 27, 2011

The deadline for 2012 tourism grants is fast approaching and, so far, nine organizations have turned in their requests.

As of Wednesday, Oct. 26, organizations that have already submitted requests include the Missouri State Corn Husking Association, Country Patchwork Quilt Guild, Women in Ag Conference, Friends of Miami, Slater Bear Creek Blues Festival, Friends of Jim the Wonder Dog, Mar-Saline Development Corporation and Pennytown. An additional nine organizations that had written grants for 2011 hadn't yet applied for next year.

Marshall Tourism Commission has approximately $85,000 available for grants, according to a report from the Chamber Tourism Committee. Much like this past year, marketing and promotion will be the priority for 2012 grants in an effort to boost the county into a higher grant bracket with the state. Saline County is currently in the state's "small market" category and only able to receive $5,000 annually in grant reimbursements. The county has to prove having a history of using $10,000 per year for two years in print advertising in order to jump to the next level.

Applications are available at the Chamber office, 214 N. Lafayette Ave, or online at

All applications are due back to the Chamber by Monday, Oct. 31. The tourism committee will meet at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4, to review applications and a distribution list for the tourism brochure. The tourism commission will conduct final interviews Monday, Dec. 12.
