Vaughn "Cotton" Merchant, 88, of Marshall, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at First Christian Church in Marshall, with Rev. Vernon Maxted officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial with military rites will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Born Aug. 26, 1923, in Celt, he was the son of the late Walter Henry Merchant and Mary Clemons Merchant. On June 15, 1946, he married Helen Epperson who survives of the home. They had just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Marshall American Legion Post 191. He was a lifelong resident of the Marshall area and a salesman retiring from Investors Diversified Services. He had been a member of First Christian Church since 1946 where he served as a deacon, elder emeritus and a member of the New Century Class. He folded the flag at military funerals for many years and volunteered for several years delivering Meals-On-Wheels.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Rapp and her husband, Dale, of Leesburg, Fla.; one son, Kenneth Merchant and his wife, Kathy, of Corpus Christi, Texas; three grandchildren, Michael Tuck, Christina Tuck and B.J. Tuck; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Harold Epperson.
