Elmer (Murph) Murphy Jr., 84, of Marshall, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with Pastor Randy Shannon officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Born July 12, 1927, in Marshall, he was the son of the late Elmer T. Murphy and Susie Elizabeth French Murphy. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Malta Bend American Legion Post 558. On Oct. 7, 1945, he married Joan Brown who survives of the home. He lived in Marshall his entire life, was a partner in Sullivan & Murphy's DX Station for a short time and was owner and operator of Murphy's Sporting Goods and Liquor for 36 years. He was a member of Marshall Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Michelle Wansing and her husband, Steven, of rural Marshall; a son, Michael Murphy of Carpenteria, Calif.; two grandchildren, Edward Wansing and his wife, Carly, and Stephanie Wansing; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Arnold, Dorothy Johnson and his twin sister, Jewell Bales.
