George W. Wise Jr., 73, of Independence, formerly of Saline County, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at St. Mary's Manor in Blue Springs.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slater, with Fr. Rob Fields officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Slater City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Buesing, Jacob Wise, Allen Wise, Ronald Wise, Brad Wahle and Gary Fink. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Habitat For Humanity or Life Teen at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Born June 14, 1938, in Marshall, he was the son of the late George W. Wise Sr. and Anna Jane Adams Wise, who survives of Slater. On Feb. 16, 1957, he married Barbara Bennington. On May 27, 1989, in Warsaw, he married Mary Bonds Sanders who survives of the home.

He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Warsaw. He was a 1956 graduate of Slater High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, honorably discharged as a Sergeant, and remained in the Reserves until 1964. He was employed for over 25 years as a sales agent and district manager with the W.R. Grace Company. He developed a baby pig mix that enabled farmers to market hogs earlier. He and his wife owned and operated Century 21 Farm & Home Realty, Wise Insurance and Valley Flea Market & Antique Mall in Warsaw until their retirement. In 1998, he founded the Habitat For Humanity in Warsaw. He lived in the Sedalia and Warsaw area for many years before moving to Independence in 2009.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Allen Wise and his wife, Becky, of Warrensburg, Ronald Wise of Slater, and Barbara Fink and her husband, Gary, of Stanton, Iowa; four step-children, Mike Sanders and his wife, Janet, of Pleasant Hill, Linda Smith of Independence, Janet Sanders Wahle and her husband, Brad, of Lee's Summit, and Jason Sanders and his wife, Katy, of St. Louis; four brothers, Leroy Wise and his wife, Kay, of Miami, Wayne Wise and his wife, Vicki, of Miami, Mike Wise and his wife, Rachel, of Kingsville, and Paul Wise and his wife, Pam, of Harrisonville; three sisters, Jennie Boggs and her husband, Raymond, of Slater, Connie Hays and her husband, Rick, of Slater, and Ruth Hagedorn and her husband, Chris, of Blue Springs; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Wise; a brother, Daniel R. (Dickie) Wise; and two sisters, Ida Pisha and Mary Boston.
