Mercedes Duncan Smith, 98, of Columbia, died Thursday, June 16, 2011.

Born Oct. 24, 1912, in Andrew County, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Mollie Spicer Duncan. On Sept. 2, 1951, she married Jack Kermit Smith who preceded her in death in 1979. She graduated from Fillmore Consolidated High School in 1930 and graduated from Missouri Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1933. She received her Bachelor of Science degree with a certificate in public health nursing. She was supervisor of public health nursing in Jackson County. She was an instructor at Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri-Columbia from 1952-1960. She retired in 1960. She served on the Missouri School of Religion Board from 1980-1990 and was a State Tree Farmer receiving Missouri State Tree Farmer of the Year Award in 1993.
Survivors include two step-daughters, Doris Wyrsch and Jean Benson; two granddaughters, Sally Malan and her husband,Robert, and Jayne Kempf and her husband, Greg, all of Marshall; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Lowell Duncan and one step-daughter, Marilou Robertson.
