Heather Emde works several jobs as part of her SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience). She works as a lifeguard at Salt Fork YMCA and at the Waverly Pool. She has also worked for three years at Peter's Market in Waverly.

Heather Emde, a 2011 Santa Fe graduate from Waverly joined FFA as a high school freshman because her brother had been a member.

"I saw all the things he had done and I wanted to do the same thing," she said.

Heather, the daughter of Kevin and Carrie Emde, was one of seven Santa Fe members who received the FFA State Degree at the Missouri convention last April.

Her SAE (Supervised Ag Experience) was two fold.

"One is working at the YMCA as a lifeguard and then the other one is at Peter's Market," she explained, adding that in the summers she also works as a lifeguard at the Waverly pool. At the market, where she has worked for about three years, she runs the cash register and helps with the stocking and packing of apples and peaches.

"The biggest thing I've taken from my all my jobs is patience, especially because I'm around kids and people who are mad about something," she said.

As an FFA member and part of the officer team, Heather has learned to be more active in the organization. She also encourages others to step up as well.

" I try to get people more active," she said, acknowledging it does take a lot of time and is sometimes difficult to be in FFA and juggle sports and work schedules.

Her favorite activity was the FFA National Convention, which she went to three times

"I just love going and meeting new people," she said, "Plus the leadership stuff that it is offering."

Heather said she would recommend FFA to a freshman entering highschool because she feels like it can prepare them for the "regular world."

" I feel like I can take leadership to my jobs. You're treated better because you can offer something to your employers," she said.

She served as treasurer of FFA as a junior and served as the student advisor as a senior. She also participated in several CDE (Career Development Event) teams including Floriculture as a junior which went to state. She also participated on the Meats team as a sophomore.

She has won proficiency awards for placement for her work at Peter's Market and in Outdoor Recreation for her two life guarding jobs. She has also been part of the State FFA Choir for three straight years.

In other school activities she was a member of SADD, FCCLA, Chiefs Club and the yearbook staff. In FCCLA, she served in many offices including historian as a freshman, secretary as a sophomore, president as a junior and secretary as a senior. She served as secretary of SADD for one year.

Heather has also been active in the community helping coach both boys and girls Bantam Basketball and helping with the FFA Waverly service project, which included painting and decorating the nursing home for the holidays.

She is active in Holy Family and St Peter's Church in Marshall.

Her hobbies include playing basketball, swimming and reading.

This fall she plans on attending State Fair Community College for two years and then transferring to Missouri Valley College and getting a major in elementary education and minor in special education. Right now she is "leaning towards" being a first grade teacher.
