MARION, Ind. -- The two members of the Missouri Valley College men's track and field team taking part in the 60th NAIA Outdoor Championships at Marion, Ind., each raced once and were done.
In the case of the Vikings' marathoner, junior Alex Avilez, that was by design. His grueling 26-mile race was set for Saturday, and Avilez -- who had qualified in the half-marathon -- completed the course in 2:45:37.20 for 27th place. Park sophomore Daniel Tubei won the event at 2:27.12.40.
Sophomore Jon Leonard of Higginsville was seventh in the first heat of the preliminaries Thursday, and came in 29th overall with a time of 15.34 seconds. Doane senior Virgil Mitchell emerged as the champion two days later with a 13.84.
Both Avilez and Leonard wound up placing higher than where they were seeded.
Shorter (Ga.) won the men's team title with 66 points, while the women's crown was worn by Concordia (Ore.) with 86 points.
