Sr. Joan Marie Martin of Kansas City, MO, died May 10, 2011, at Mercy Villa, Omaha, Nebraska.
Born September 21, 1935, in Marshall, MO, she was the daughter of the late Urban Joseph Martin and Martha Theresa Felten Martin.
On September 8, 1954, she entered the religious community of the Sisters of Mercy where she lived as a Catholic Sister for 56 years.
Her response to Mercy ministry included 23 years as an elementary teacher in Northeast Kansas City, MO, where she taught at Holy Trinity, Holy Cross, St. Michael, St. Mary, St. Ann, and Visitation schools. Other education assignments were located in Joplin, MO, and Omaha, NE.
Sr. Joan Marie ministered to persons in affordable housing in the 1980s and 1990s in Boise and Twin Falls, Idaho, and in the Kansas City, MO, inner city.
From 1990 to 2010 Sister was chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Nampa, Idaho, and at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO. Sister also volunteered at St. Luke's Northland Hospital in Kansas City, MO.
Survivors include one sister, Mildred Kempf Moore, numerous nieces, and nephews, as well as great-grand and great-great-grand nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Bernard, Norbert, Urban (Bob), and Eugene; three sisters, Helen Widel, Dorothy Pollard Samson, and Theresa Lang.
Memorial Service Tuesday, May 17, 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Marshall, Missouri. Interment of ashes at Ridge Park Cemetery, Marshall, Missouri.
