CANTON -- The Missouri Valley College men's track and field team added an entry to the NAIA Outdoor Championships last weekend.
Sophomore Jon Leonard of Higginsville placed fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles during the Heart of America Conference Championships at Canton, with a time of 14.95 seconds to meet the national qualifying standards.
Leonard will be joined by junior Alex Avilez, who had made the cut in the half-marathon during a meet in December. Avilez placed fourth in the 10,000-meter run (34:04.76) at the HAAC meet.
The top finish for the Vikings was by freshman Reece Watkins with a second place in the 5,000 race-walk (29:46.96). Freshman Keith O'Neal was fourth in the 100 (11.03 seconds) for Valley, which finished sixth in the team standings with 35 points.
Baker (204 points) won the men's title, while Lindenwood (202) took the women's crown. The Lady Vikings had 29.5 points for seventh.
Junior Sara Stafford came in third in the shot put (12.76 meters), sophomore Rhiannon Kendrick was fourth in the high jump (1.55) and senior Sheena Carter placed fifth in the hammer throw (41.48).
The national meet will be held May 26-28 at Marion, Ind. Valley will try one more time to add athletes to the field, competing Saturday in the Emporia State (Kan.) Last Chance Meet.
