Shirley Jean Sparks Sowers, 72, of rural Brunswick, died Monday, May 2, 2011, in Slater.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Brunswick. Cremation burial will be in Elliott Grove Cemetery in Brunswick. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, at the church. Pallbearers will be Shaun Reichert and Travis Sowers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Sparks, Bill Sparks, Wayne Sparks, Terry Sparks, Tony Sanders, Lee Farley and Dr. Timothy Ryan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Elliott Grove Cemetery or to St. John's Lutheran Church.
Born Dec. 14, 1938, in rural Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late John L. Sparks and Eloise M. Nunn Sparks. On June 16, 1957, at St. John's Lutheran Church, she married Gerald V. Sowers, who preceded her in death in October 2010. She was a housewife and a bookkeeper. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and had lived in the Brunswick area most of her life.
She is survived by one daughter, Connie Sowers Reichert and her husband, Eddie, of Marshall; one son, Rick Sowers of Brunswick; four grandchildren, Shaun Reichert, Shayla Reichert Buie and her husband, Mark, and Travis Sowers, all of Brunswick, and Tori Sowers of Blue Springs; two great-grandchildren, Tanner and Taylee Buie of Brunswick; one sister, Rosie Sanders of Independence; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by seven siblings, one niece, four nephews and her in-laws, Vernon and Jerry Sowers.
