The Missouri Valley College baseball team closed out its truncated home schedule Tuesday by losing a pair of non-conference games to Hannibal-LaGrange, 9-8 and 11-3.
The Vikings came back from a 4-0 deficit in the opener with a seven-run fourth inning. Sophomore Troy Langan singled in two runs and scored the go-ahead run on junior Zach Walden's single, following an RBI bunt single by sophomore Cody Moore. A fielder's choice and Moore's steal of home closed the rally.
Valley couldn't hold on, though. Senior Josey Garnett doubled in a run and came in on a grounder in the fifth and senior Marc Luttrell's solo homer tied the game in the sixth.
The Trojans pulled ahead with two runs in the seventh, the first coming in on a double by sophomore Clint Hamilton -- who completed the circuit on a dropped fly ball.
Junior Ruben Salazar smashed a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, but otherwise Hannibal-LaGrange junior R.J. Bachtold struck out the side.
The finale wasn't close, the Trojans putting up crooked numbers in the third and fourth stanzas for a 9-0 lead. Senior Gabe Marshall's two-run homer opened the scoring, with two passed balls and a grounder adding three more runs.
Garnett plated a pair of runs with a single in the four-run fourth.
The Vikings got all of their runs in the bottom of the fourth, a dropped third strike on what would have been the third out giving them new life. Four hits followed, including freshman Josh Hartin's two-run single.
Senior Roy Whitehead relieved for Hannibal-LaGrange (23-24) and snuffed the rally, then tossed two hitless frames for his third win of the season.
Valley (8-33) will head to Omaha this weekend to play in the Bellevue Tournament.
