CANTON -- The Missouri Valley College baseball team got 24 innings at the plate over the weekend, but failed to score a run while being swept at Culver-Stockton in a four-game Heart of America Conference East Division series.
The Wildcats got a pair of five-inning complete game shutouts as they took over first place in the league race.
Senior Ismael Gutierrez improved his record to 8-1 with a four-hitter in Saturday's 10-0 opener and senior Erik Gonsalves allowed only one hit and struck out six to win, 13-0, in the early game Sunday.
Senior Andre Terrell knocked in four runs and senior Sal Rivera scored three times for Culver in the first game of the series. Junior Rickey Brown and senior Corey Gilbert each had three RBIs in the third contest.
In between, the 'Cats used three pitchers to limit Valley to four hits over seven frames for a 3-0 win in Saturday's late game. Junior Weston Loftin allowed only two runs in five-plus innings as the Vikings' starter.
Senior Jared Thompson's three-run homer propelled Culver (22-10, 13-1 HAAC) to a 6-0 first-inning lead in the 9-0 getaway game Sunday. Seniors Ian Gray and Danny O'Brien combined for four scoreless innings of relief for Valley.
The Vikings (6-23, 0-17) are scheduled to make-up a postponed game Tuesday at MidAmerica Nazarene.
