On Tuesday, March 29, several of Marshall's CDE (Career Development Event) teams competed in the Central District contest at Warrensburg. Eight of the teams qualified for that state that day and two teams, became alternates.
On Thursday, March 31, several students traveled to Warrensburg again to compete with one team taking first place and another finishing 6th place and also qualifying for state competition. Two speakers also qualified for state competition.
Taking first place in Central District competition for the second year in a row was Marshall's FFAAg Issues team. This year's members are: Rob Gorrell, Austin Thiel, Blayne Vogel, Melba Jones, Kaitlyn Smith and Kaylee Kipping.
Senior Sandy Patel was third in Extemporaneous Speaking and Freshman Kayla Elson was third in Division I public speaking; both qualifying for state competition.
Below are the other teams that will go onto state competition:
Fifth place
Soils: Cale Boedeker, Bethany Miller, Abrea Mizer and Trent Toliver.
Agriculture Mechanics: J.W. Davis, Austin Campbell, Danny Dillon and Ian Swisher.
Forestry: Michael Harlow, Lucas Hinnah, Brandon Standley and Blayne Vogel.
Livestock: Katie Green, Rob Gorrell, Austin Thiel and Eric Underwood.
Sixth place
Horses: Tyler Breshears, Kayla Elson, Abbey Land and Katie Wansing.
FFA Knowledge: Payton Beeler, Zack Glassmaker, Mason Sandidge and Allie Sprague.
Seventh place
Agronomy: Kameron Godsey, Jessica Johnson, Deanna Pannell and Evan Summers.
Floriculture: Jessica Browning, Britney Harris, Lauren Hisle, Stephanie Stark.
Meats: Jacob Davis, Amanda Foltz, Andrew Markes, Caleb Willis.
Alternates to state:
Dairy Cattle: Ely Anderson, Nick Latimer, Stephen Meyer and Kyle Mullins.
Poultry: Brandy Haynes, Aaron Kerksiek, Kyle Otken and Rebecca Viles.
Several Marshall FFA members also placed well at the Area 6 contest held on Monday, March 21.
Sophomore Abrea Mizer was inducted as the Area 6 treasurer for 2011-2012.
In Completed Ownership Record book Alex Sprigg took first place with a gold rating and will compete in state; Abby Elson was 4th place, also earning a Gold rating.
Three students also won proficiency awards:
Abby Elson, 1st place in Emerging Agriculture technology;
Sandy Patel, 2nd place in Food Science and Technology;
Austin Thiel, 3rd place area Diversified Crop Production-placement

FFA Knowledge Team - Allie Sprague, Payton Beeler, Mason Sandidge, Zack Glassmaker - 2nd place, gold rating;
Extemporaneous speaking - Sandy Patel - 2nd place, gold rating;
FFA Creed speaking - Mason Sandidge - 3rd place, gold rating;
Advanced Prepared speaking - Rob Gorrell - 2nd place, gold rating;
Advanced Prepared speaking - Austin Thiel - 7th place, gold rating.
Other Marshall FFA members also participated in Area 6 competition.
