Marshall man charged with statutory rape

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

A Marshall man is in custody on charges of statutory rape in the first degree.

Carlos Alvarez, 23, is accused of having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old female relative in August 2010. According to the probable cause statement, Alvarez was one of a number of men the juvenile told officials she had engaged in sexual activities with.

In the probable cause statement, police claim Alvarez said he believed the victim was "about 15 or 14 years of age." Alvarez is being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond. If convicted, he faces not less than 5 years or life imprisonment in the Department of Corrections.

Editor's note: Charges contained in reports provided by law enforcement officials are not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting charges must be presented before a jury, whose duty is to determine if the accused is guilty or not guilty of the charges.
