Dean Martin, 84, of rural Slater, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at the Big Bend Retreat Nursing Home in Slater.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Slater. Rev. David L. Duncan will officiate. Bethany Weiker, organist, will accompany Gerald Gerhard as he sings "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace". Burial with military honors will be in the Slater City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Cano, Ray Dougherty, Abram Cano, Aaron Dougherty, Danny Bryson and Randy Morton. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Cure PSP, or Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy, in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born July 25, 1926, in Saline County, he was the son of the late Willard C. and Norene Hains Martin. On June 14, 1958, in Slater, he married Betty Morton who survives of the home.
He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Cano and her husband, David, of Chesterfield and Renita Dougherty and her husband, Ray, of Holden; two grandsons, Abram Cano and Aaron Dougherty; two granddaughters, Madison Cano and Courtney Dougherty; and a brother, Eugene Martin of Semmes, Ala. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Martin.
Mr. Martin was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and served on the U.S.S. Hornet. He was a member of the American Legion Post #78 in Slater and was a retired farmer.
