William M. (Bill) Kilgore, 89, of Slater, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at Plaza Manor Nursing Center in Kansas City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2010, at Slater United Methodist Church with Rev. David L. Duncan officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Slater City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steve Salmon, Walt Salmon, Jan Salmon, Mike Brigman, Patrick Brigman, Kyle Hardy and Sam Hardy. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post #78 in Slater in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born Dec. 30, 1920, in Slater, he was the son of the late William M. Kilgore and Loretta Johnson Kilgore Griffin. On Jan. 29, 1940, he married Mary Virginia Pettit,who preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1974. On April 14, 1978, he married Valda Lewellen Murray, who survives of the home.
He was a member of Slater United Methodist Church and had served on the Slater City Council. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #78 and the V.F.W. Post #4367, both in Slater. He was a member of the 401 Couples' Club and the Only Way Fishing and Golf Club. He owned and operated Slater Machine Shop for 44 years until his retirement in 1995. In retirement, he specialized in growing tomatoes, fishing, traveling, and raising his family. Mr. Kilgore was proud to serve his community and country.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Scherry Kay Salmon, of Independence; one step-daughter, Karen Smith, of Marshall; one step-son, Larry Mullins, of Lee's Summit; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Melford W. (Bud) Kilgore, of Fort Worth, Texas.
He was preceded in death by a step-granddaughter.
