This is the second consecutive year the college has set a fall enrollment record.
The fall 2010 enrollment edges out the fall 2009 enrollment of 1,453. The final count for MVC's 122nd academic year is determined after Aug. 30, which was the last day for students to add or drop classes.
"I think the growth we have seen on campus coincides with the dedication of our board of trustees, administration, faculty, and staff," MVC President Bonnie Humphrey said. "We truly believe that Missouri Valley College is a great place for our students to develop a lifelong love of learning."
Of the 1,476 students currently enrolled at MVC, 937 students are Missouri residents; 149 are international students; and the entire student body is made up of students from 43 states and 39 countries.
Humphrey attributes several factors to MVC's growth.
"With diligent planning by our board and administration, and with the generosity of our donors, we continuously work to improve the campus facilities, add new academic programs, and provide our students with unique learning and social opportunities," Humphrey said. "I am very excited for the upcoming year, and I look forward to the new adventures on the horizon."
MVC begins the 2010-11 academic year with a new administrator, Sharon Weiser, who assumes the role of chief academic officer. This is also the first year for a bachelor's degree in music.
Renovations to residence halls, technology upgrades, renovations to a science lab, and construction of the Porter-Brown Residence Hall were some of the projects completed this summer.
Ongoing projects include the Viking Village Residence Hall, which is expected to be complete for the spring 2011 semester. The installation of synthetic turf at Gregg-Mitchell Field is expected to be complete in early September.
Freshman will be officially welcomed at Convocation at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, in the Burns Athletic Complex. Susan Dittmer, associate professor of speech communications and 2010 John McCallum Excellence in Teaching recipient, will deliver the keynote address. Other MVC administrators, students, and members of the Marshall community will also welcome the Class of 2014.
