Arrow Rock begins the Labor Day weekend on a musical note with a family-friendly event for music lovers: the Arrow Rock Folk Jam.

The event from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, provides an open mic opportunity for acoustic musicians who want to share their music in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, according to a news release from Historic Arrow Rock Council.

"The musicians who play at the Arrow Rock Folk Jam are folks who play music simply for the joy of it," said Sandy Selby, president of the HARC, the organization sponsoring the event. "We expect to hear everything from guitars and fiddles to harmonicas to dulcimers to a capella voices. We welcome all acoustic acts, whether they are traditional 'folk' acts or not. There are really no rules for participation except that acts should put on a show that's appropriate for any age."

A stage will be set up on the Old Schoolhouse garden and there will be other spots throughout the village where musicians can gather for informal jam sessions.

"Anyone who isn't musically inclined can fill the very important role of audience member," Selby said. "There will be tables and chairs in the garden area, or spectators may bring their own lawn chairs or blankets and relax on the Schoolhouse lawn."

At 3 p.m., the musicians will take a break as the HARC will host its annual Ice Cream Freeze-Off on the Schoolhouse lawn.

The Freeze-Off is a fundraiser that supports the arts programs of HARC. The $3 admission entitles participants to sample all the Freeze-Off entries, vote for their favorite, and fill their plates with a generous helping of ice cream and homemade desserts, Selby said.

Although stage reservations are not required, musicians who would like to reserve a specific stage time at the Folk Jam should contact Selby at 660-837-3148 or president@arrowrockarts.org.
