Bike rodeo offers fun, riding safety tips

Friday, August 6, 2010

ConAgra's first annual Bike Rodeo saw over 50 participants Saturday, July 31. Complete with a riding course and staged driveways, the event emphasized bicycle safety.

Local companies donated prizes for the event and any money donated by participants went to the United Way. Volunteers from MVCAA and CASA also helped run the event and could be found teaching and encouraging children along the course.

After registration, children's bikes were inspected to ensure they were mechanically sound. There was also a face-painting station and a helmet fitting station, where participants received new helmets free of charge.

Out of three age categories, one boy and girl were named winners for their presentation of riding and bike safety. In the four- to six-year-old age group, winners were Halley Campbell and Ryan Jones. In the seven- to nine-year-old age group, Geri Ronsley was the winning girl and Rhys Edwards was the winning boy. Tamara Burec and Sam Van Vactor won the in 10- to 15-year-old category.

Each winner was awarded a bike at the end of the event. Additionally, each participant received prizes after picking a rubber ducky from the duck pond. Prizes ranged from free pizza to YMCA visitor's passes.
