A storm that rolled through Saline County Friday afternoon, July 31, hit Gilliam hard, knocking down a number of trees.

Barb Trapp said the storm hit just after 4 p.m. and knocked power out until after midnight.

No structures or vehicles were damaged, and no one was injured that she knew of, she said.

I have to agree with everything captaingbb has said.

@ all of the negative Snarkies (you know who you are), get a clue and while you are at it get a life. If people have problems with things not being reported in the paper, why don't you report them.

I live in New Orleans and it is not uncommon for people across the street to loose power while I do not and visa-versa.

I enjoy seeing these articles in marshallnews.com as I am originally from Gilliam and it is a way keep-up with what is going on in the area AND I appreciate and support POWER linemen!

Oh by the way Gilliam Gal, is wasn't a power line, it was a cable line.

Don't worry about the nitpickers. You did fine. And I really appreciate your effort to let the community know what happened in Gilliam.

Wow, it is amazing to me how Snarky people can be, will no longer post photos with the Democrat. Sorry, you all didn't experience everything that went on in this neighborhood!

And for Nancy007 and Gilliam Gal 2010, unless you've had anyone in your family that's had to leave the state for 3 weeks at a time to work a hurricane, ice storm, etc. I strongly suggest then when you flip on your coffee maker tomorrow, you remember why you could! They might make good money, but it's for a reason, it's a dangerous job, and probably not something you'd be willing to do in 10 degree weather when it's still icing!! Or when it's 90 degrees and the winds are blowing 70 miles and hour and you're hanging out of a bucket truck.

Yes, Barb is on a different grid for power. Outside of Gilliam is on Rural Electric. Electricity can be like weather, raining at your house, and dry next door.

On another note:

Barb, from that corner with the black car, turn towards Glasgow, and look at the tree down on a car.

BTW: The tree is cleaned up. Can't see how anyone could miss a dark green car under a green tree. Although it happenes, it would of been a little harder to not hear the tractor and chainsaw that was used to move the tree.

I live in Gilliam as well and did not lose power at all, even for a few seconds. I also find it strange that about a month ago there was a big wind that came through and did major damage to trees AND property (structures) on the north side of the railroad tracks and there was no coverage on that. Also, KCP&L wasn't rushing to come here when there were trees laying on power lines then. It took them 3-4 days to even acknowledge that a storm had even blown through. I don't feel too sorry for the workers that have to take care of messes like this. After all, it is their job and they do get compensated quite well to do it. And it is not like they came right during the storm and high wind to fix the problem. I feel that these are points to consider.

We published information about the storm because Barb Trapp kindly took the time to let us know what happened and send photos. Next time there's a storm or any other newsworthy event in Gilliam I hope someone will give us a shout.

If it was the power company I work for, everyone first would find a place to hide,at least long enough to think of a excuse not to go out and WORK,and then whoever was made to do it would come back and act like they just saved the world and how nobody could have done it butt them of course that only if they did not come up with a excuse in the first place THANK YOU just a work rant love power company

Tis true - we are on KCPL, but houses across the highway are a different power company.

Don't you think that maybe Barb Trapp might be on a different power line than you. Just cause one power line gets knocked out doesn't mean the whole town will be without electricity.

That is a little odd. I live here in gilliam and I was here all day and all night and my power was only in and out for a short time. I was watching TV until about 1:00 am . That does take power. Thanks
