Democrat-News will preserve veteran video stories (Updated 1:10 p.m. Wednesday)

Wednesday, July 14, 2010
Veterans in Saline County will soon have a venue for sharing stories of wartime experience.

Coinciding with Rep. Jason Kander, other representatives and the University of Missouri's effort to record veteran stories, The Marshall Democrat-News will also be producing a video program.

MDN's Eric Crump and Pat Nolan will chronicle veteran stories, with August 10 slated as the first day of filming.

"A project like this is exceedingly important because we are rapidly losing access to the stories that these veterans have," Nolan said. "The stories that veterans have are very different than the stories you read in history books. They are the stories of the people on the ground -- the mud, the smell, the tragedy, sorrow and joy -- and the little moments that retain one's humanity in a combat zone. In my opinion, those are the stories that people studying history and military warfare should re-watch and learn from."

Charlie Guthrie of Slater will assist Nolan and Crump in coordinating veteran involvement. Last year he helped coordinate a two-day interview session in Slater for Missouri Veteran Stories -- the program Kander is helping to keep going.

Kander said MU would keep the statewide program going without an allotment from the state budget. The program had been funded through Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder's office and cost the state about $600,000 per year prior to being cut from the budget, according to Kander.

Although Saline County Veteran Stories is running on time rather than funding, the project may prove to be an asset for the county as a whole.

"It's just so important," Guthrie said. "We've lost two people that were interviewed" in August 2009, referring to World War II veterans C.W. "Bill" Giger and B.H. "Bill" Kerns.

Marshall Democrat-News has a goal of posting 1 to 2 videos online per week. Visit www.marshallnews.com for updates.

Eric & Pat, Thanks. And Special Thanks to the MDN for sponsoring this. Too bad we did not think of this before we started losing all of the WWI volunteers.

Hey Eric, There are lots of small plaques and other special "things/places" that commerate the service of veterans and groups of veterans all over the county. It would be nice that those things be recorded/photographed. One special window is a special stained glass window at the Malta Bend United Methodist Church to honor those who served in WWI. Most people don't ever look at it because it is where most people are greated and their coat taken and hung up. It is special and very rare.
