Members of the 4-H Bizy Beavers Club practiced show drills Monday, June 21, at the Saline County Fairground in preparation for a performance at the County Fair.
This year's fair will feature a dog obedience show with kids from multiple 4-H clubs competing against one another.
The Bizy Beavers group ranges from ages 8 to 13, with canines that vary just as much. Some members walked pets twice their weight and commanded them to sit, follow, turn and stay.
Christy Bentley, the club leader and dog project leader, stood by with patience as she directed from the ring.
Shadow, a young Old English sheepdog, remained calm for most of his performance. He was focused on the treats that Abby, 12, held in her hand. Shadow stayed at her heels and obeyed relatively well for the first few minutes.
"I ran out of hot dogs," Abby said when she took her seat. Apparently the sheepdog didn't want to turn figure eights.
Distractions are common with first-year obedience training, and Bentley reassured team members that it could be difficult. Frustration didn't run rampant, though, which is good for the team. They remained calm and heeded advice.
Anna Gass, Abby's mother, said they've been very happy with their dog.
"Shadow loves our pigs. He goes in there and licks their faces," she said.
The 4-H members have practiced every Monday for five weeks and drip with excitement about the competition.
The Saline County Dog Show will take place July 12 through July 17. The fair will also include a tractor pull and an MRCA and URA sanctioned rodeo.
