Charles Ray Richards, 84, of Sugar Creek died Friday, May 14, 2010, at The Groves in Independence. Memorial graveside services with military rites will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Malta Bend Cemetery in Malta Bend with William W. Harlow officiating. Born July 10, 1925, in Malta Bend, he was the son of the late Volley Ray Richards and Alanetta Raines Richards. On Dec. 21, 1946, he married Juanita Virginia Johnson, who survives of the home. He had lived in Independence since 1952, where he spent his career as an operating engineer for American Paving. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 21 and V.F.W. Post 4242, both in Independence. He was a Methodist. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Michael C. Richards of Oak Grove; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew.
