MHS tennis: Owls pick up road win at Helias
JEFFERSON CITY -- The third time was the charm for the Marshall boys' tennis team, which bounced back from two losses to non-conference mid-Missouri opponents Wednesday with a 6-3 victory at Helias.
The Owls won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles, but they weren't easy. After dropping tilts in the top two singles spots, including senior Ethan Murphy's second 11-9 setback in as many days, Marshall posted four straight wins.
Seniors Lucas Hart and John Van got 10-7 decisions, senior Brandon Mullins fought back from a 7-4 deficit to beat junior Christian Villanueva, 11-9, and senior Trey Clemons also nipped freshman Alex Eichoff, 11-9.
Sophomore Nick Kruger and junior Chris Grigsby got the lone doubles win for the Crusaders (4-5), who took last year's meeting, 6-3, by a 10-8 margin over Murphy and Hart.
Van and senior Jimmy Rector enjoyed a 10-4 victory and Mullins and sophomore Reece Evans took a 10-6 contest.
The Owls (13-2) will play Friday in the Smith-Cotton Tournament before returning home Monday for an NCMC match against Mexico, when they will host their annual fundraising barbecue.
