Vern Calvin Laughlin, 76, of rural Marshall died Friday, April 16, 2010, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in Marshall, with Rev. Pam Sebastian officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial with military rites will be at Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or Malta Bend American Legion Post 558 in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. Born June 10, 1933, in Marshall, he was the son of the late Vern Edward Laughlin and Helen Keehart Laughlin. On Sept. 14, 1960, he married Marybelle Potter, who preceded him in death Dec. 16, 2002. He was a 1951 graduate of Marshall High School and a U.S. Army veteran having served in Germany. He had lived in the Marshall area his entire life, was a conductor for Illinois Central Gulf Railroad for 35 years and a lifelong farmer. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served in numerous capacities. He was also a member of Trilumina Lodge No. 205 A.F. & A.M. and Malta Bend American Legion Post 558. He was active at the Marshall Senior Center where he delivered Meals-On-Wheels.
Survivors include one daughter, Bellenda Laughlin of Centerview; several nieces and nephews; and one sister-in-law, Catherine Thomas of Warrensburg.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth D. Laughlin.
