Boonville-Farmers Livestock Auction: Cattle Auction Report for 04/05/2010

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Receipts: 1821 Week Ago: 1710 Year Ago: 1920

Compared to last week feeder steers traded 5.00 to 7.00 higher, spots of 8.00
to 9.00 higher, except 500-650 lb steers firm to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers
under 600 lbs sold fully 8.00 to 10.00 higher with many instances of up to 12.00
higher; over 600 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher.
Lots of new faces in the crowd this week at Farmers Livestock, as a little green
grass brings locals out of the woodwork and off the farm. Buyers were aggressive
from the opening chant and at times throughout the day, bid as if it were their
last chance to own any cattle. In fact, itís worth mentioning that many of the
heifers sold this week at the local barn brought more than their steer mates
would have just a few short weeks ago. The light supply of yearling steer cattle
on hand were met with lots of interest, but heifers over 700 lbs were all but
absent. Fed cattle trade broke wide open late Tuesday afternoon and climbed over
the century mark for the first time in a very long while, sure to stir more
optimism in the cattle sector. Supply moderate to heavy and demand good to very
good. Cows and bulls accounted for 18 percent of the total offering. The feeder
supply consisted of 52 percent steers and bulls and 48 percent heifers; 41
percent of all the cattle weighed over 600 lbs.
