The Marshall High School band received a "I," or superior, rating at Missouri State High School Activities Association Large Ensemble Festival held Wednesday, March 17, in Boonville.

The band, under the direction of Kate Koffman, performed "Greenwillow Portrait" by Mark Williams and "American Riversongs" by Pierre La Plante.

Individual band students also competed at MSHSAA District Solo and Ensemble Festival held Friday, March 26, in Sedalia, Koffman said.

Those students who earn a "I" rating, which is the highest on a scale of "I" to "V," are eligible to move on to the state level of contest, which will be held in Columbia in April.

The following soloists received "I" ratings: Gisel Alvarez, clarinet; Kim Deutsch, oboe; Brandon Pace, clarinet; Kirby Brayman, clarinet; and Matthew Kraus, trumpet.

For their performances, these students were awarded "II," or excellent, ratings on their solos: Tasha McAlister, trumpet; Dylan Fornshell, bass clarinet; Ashley Smith, flute.

The trumpet trio of Armistead O'Neal, Kolton Harper and McAlister and the clarinet trio of Megan Hager, Shayla Mills and Alvarez both received "II" ratings as well.

MHS band members will perform their spring concert Wednesday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in Bueker Middle School auditorium. The band's annual ice cream social is scheduled for Monday, May 3, at 6 p.m. in the high school commons.

Congratulations! A top rating is something to be VERY proud of! It means achievement of high levels in several different areas, usually from more than 1 judge for the ensembles. Be proud and keep on playin'!

Way to go everyone! I think this is wonderful! To be able to play an instrument for others to hear is a beautiful gift. You all rock! Way to go to Ms. Koffman too, an excellent teacher! She is definately in the right field. : )
