Leo Martin, 81, of Slater, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Big Bend Retreat in Slater.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Slater, with Rev. Robert Sisney officiating. Bethany Weiker, organist, will accompany Gerald Gerhard as he sings, "The Sweet By-and-By" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." She will also accompany the congregation in singing "I Love to Tell the Story." Burial will be in Gilliam Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charles Bolten, Brian Cook, Ken Roberts, Mike Galloway, Martin Galloway and David Jones. Visitation will be from 10 to11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or Slater Veterans Memorial Park in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born May 10, 1928, north of Slater, he was the son of the late Willard C. and Norene Hains Martin. On April 11, 1950, in Arrow Rock, he married Edith Feuers, who survives of the home. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Slater. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 78 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4367, both in Slater. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 25 years of service as a mail carrier. He later worked at Arrow Rock State Park.
Also surviving are two daughters, Julie Galloway and her husband, Mike, of Dexter and Jana Roberts and her husband, Ken, of Columbia; four grandchildren, Natalie Bolten, Amanda Galloway Bolten, Heather Galloway and Martin Galloway; four great-grandchildren, Grant Bolten, Olivia Bolten, Joseph Bolten and Michael Cook; and two brothers, Eugene Martin of Semmes, Ala. and Dean Martin of rural Slater.
