Sherill Ann McMellen, 54, of Slater, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at her home.

Memorial graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at Slater City Cemetery, with Rev. Penny Smith officiating. Visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13 at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Memorials are suggested to cancer research at Ellis Fischel Hospital in Columbia.

Born May 23, 1955, in Long Beach, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Robert Edward Coutts and Kay (Mason) Coutts Fierro, who survives ofClaremore, Okla. On Dec. 3, 1974, in Westminster, Calif., she married Kevin McMellen, who survives of the home. She had worked as a certified nurse assistant at Big Bend Retreat in Slater since 2003. Previously she had worked at Marshall Habilitation Center.

Additional survivors include two sons, Dr. Mark E. McMellen and wife, Katie, of St. Louis and Damien McMellen and friend, Kelly Vance, of Slater; a daughter, Jamie Henkel and husband, Jeremy, of Lowden, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Peggy McMellen, of Slater; six grandchildren; Isabel Henkel and Libby Henkel of Lowden, Iowa, Ella Grace Hill of Slater, Jason McMellen and Justin McMellen of Slater, and William Scott; a brother, John Coutts and wife, Sara, of Burson, Calif.; a sister, Sondra Bussey and husband, Phred, of Tidewater, Ore.; and Kool-Aid son, Chris "Tonto" Owens of Slater.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a son, Jason Nathaniel McMellen. her maternal grandparents Calvin and Zereita Mason, her father-in-law Walter Oliver McMellen; and two brothers-in-law, Paul Daniel McMellen and Richard Lee McMellen.

The McMellen family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the staffs of Ellis Fischel Hospital, Fitzgibbon Hospital Community Cancer Center and home health care/hospice nurses: You people are the greatest! And we would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Big Bend Retreat. You really showed Sherill that you cared, and for that we are eternally grateful. The McMellen Family.
