Forgotten flea collar injures dog (UPDATE: 4:25 p.m.)

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Update 4:25 Tuesday: Ollie J. Huston of Marshall has been charged with class B misdemeanor animal neglect, second offense, according to unofficial online court records.

A forgotten flea collar caused injuries to a mixed-breed dog treated at a local veterinary clinic, according to sheriff's deputies who investigated the case Monday, Feb. 8, and the owner of the dog could face animal neglect charges.

According to the sheriff's department report, the 55-pound dog had outgrown a 10-inch flea collar on its neck, causing the collar to embed through the dog's skin and into muscle tissue.

Another collar on the dog measured 17 inches in circumference, deputies said.

The owner of the dog told deputies he put the flea collar on the dog in August or September 2009 and had forgotten about it. He said he hadn't noticed the wound on the dog's neck until Monday morning, according to the report.

A report on the incident is being forwarded to the Saline County Prosecuting Attorney's office, deputies said.

I commented on the followup story and must say something to this one also. Ollie is elderly, is maybe his memory or eyesight not well. Where are his friends, or neighbors? Can someone honestly say that there was NEVER anyone else around him or the dog who should have noticed if collar was becoming too small. I pet everyone's animals that I am around, if am allowed. I would think someone else would have noticed this. If there was never anyone else around, then shame on you Marshall community. What happened to assisting our neighbors, checking on their well-being, etc... Let us not pass judgement on Mr. Huston, I also condone the veterinarian for not assisting, but deciding that charges needed to be pressed. I sure hope it is not either of the 2 local veterinarians I frequent, as I have always believed them to be the type who works directly with their patients and the caregivers of their patients - regarding education on issues, and encouraging proper care and treatment - and to not seek vengeance.

How could somebody neglect a loving animal? I look into my pets eyes and cant imagine a person that could cause these innocent creatures any pain. I am very glad that the police took this seriously. I feel so sorry for the dog, the pain itt must be in. He doesn't deserve to have any more pets.

Maybe you should take care of your own kids instead of being a bad role model for them and being a name caller. I know some things about Mr. huston that are some of the sweetest things. He is a good man and anyone can make mistakes.

He has no controle over what his grown daughter choses to do. She is a adult and makes her own decisions.

Maybe your downfalls should be written about on here. I dont think you would be very proud of yourself. You are awfully brave to attack a person but probably not women enough to say anything to a persons face.

2nd offense for this guy, I highly doubt we can give him the "benefit of taking him to the vet." If he was paying any attention to the dog in those "months" it was on he would have noticed a collar embedded.

He has a history of this so it's time to bar him from owning pets to say the very least. Put him on "poop" duty at the animal shelter for a year and make him pay a stiff fine sounds like a solution to me.

How could you use the excuse that he "forgot" about the flea collar as it was covered up by the other collar? The poor dog must have been in horrible pain as the flea collar slowly embedded through the animal's skin and into the underlaying muscle tissue! Didn't the owner notice the dog's behavior? The dog must have been choking, coughing, lethargic, "forgot"! Give me a break! Sounds like the owner is a repeat offender who should not be permitted to have a dog or any other type of animal, lest he "forget" to take care of them.

Come on folks, maybe the owner put the flea collar on as we all would and then put the other collar on to walk and exercise the dog, concealing the flea collar. A few months goes by and he realizes his oversight, then takes the dog for appropriate medical care. I think we should hold off judgement until we see what the police and prosecutor have to say about it. Circumstances vary, but I think taking the dog to the vet says something about the man's intentions.

Glad the sheriff can handle this.

I had two dogs come up nearly to the back porch and tear apart my little rat terrier.

I couldn't even get the deputy to talk to the owners.

Well win some, lose some.
