County commission approves supply bids

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

At their meeting Tuesday, Feb. 2, Saline County Commissioners approved bids on prices for supplies throughout the year.

MFA Oil was the only company to submit a bid for fuel. The county will be able to purchase unleaded gasoline for $0.035 less than the pump price and diesel fuel for $0.045 less than the pump price.

Country Heating and Cooling submitted the only bid for HVAC repairs at $55 for the first hour of a service call and $25 for each subsequent hour.

Bids were received from Viebrock of Sedalia, Metal Culverts Inc. of Jefferson City and West Pipe Co. of El Dorado Springs for various types and sizes of culverts to be used on county roads.

For road rock, bids were submitted by Skyline Materials Ltd.-Glasgow Quarries in Gilliam, Mid-Missouri Limestone Inc. in Kingdom City and APAC.

Despite receiving overlapping bids, commissioners accepted them all. Northern District Commissioner Norvelle "Brownie" Brown said this measure helps in cases when one company is out of a certain item, so the county can get the needed item from a different source.

He compared it to just going to a different grocery store because the first was out of milk.

Brown also said, especially for the rock bids, it is helpful to have suppliers located in different parts of the county. Because of transportation costs and drive time for an on-the-clock worker, it would be cost prohibitive to purchase rock from a quarry in Gilliam to repair a road in the very southern part of the county, he said.

Commissioners will meet again Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 9 a.m. in the lower level of the courthouse.
