Prep Hoops Round-up: Lady Owls get second NCMC win

Wednesday, January 27, 2010
A 10-point fourth quarter from sophomore Allea Summers propelled the Marshall girls' basketball team to a 34-27 NCMC win over visiting Hannibal on Tuesday.

Summers had been held scoreless until midway through the final frame, when she hit her first of two three-pointers to give the Lady Owls a 27-25 lead after they had fallen behind for the first time since early in the game.

Shifting from a full-court man-to-man defense to a 2-1-2 zone down the stretch, Marshall was able to keep the Lady Pirates from scoring from the field and increased its lead behind Summers' shooting.

Senior Katelyn Ferguson led Hannibal (0-15, 0-6 NCMC) with 10 points.

The Lady Owls (2-14, 2-4) got six points and four steals from sophomore Allie Bockstetter, junior Jalisah Jackson came up with five thefts and junior Alexis Benton collected 10 rebounds.

Marshall, which ended an 11-game losing streak, travels to Mexico for a league clash Thursday.

Sweet Springs 60, Calhoun 11

WINDSOR -- Sophomore Brittany Higgins' recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds Tuesday for Sweet Springs, which swamped Calhoun, 60-11, in the first round of the Windsor Tournament.

Higgins hit four shots during the Lady Greyhounds' 20-2 second-quarter spree, sending them into the break with a 35-9 lead. The Lady Eagles (0-11) only had one second-half field goal and never got to the free-throw line during the game.

Senior Rachel Thornton had 12 points to go along with a strong defensive effort for Sweet Springs (11-3), which meets Green Ridge in Thursday's semifinal.

Jamestown 38, Malta Bend 8

PRAIRIE HOME -- Jamestown's eight first-quarter points were as many as Malta Bend could manage for the game Tuesday during a 38-8 romp during pool play in the CCAA Tournament at Prairie Home.

The Lady Eagles led 15-2 at halftime and doubled their total during the third period for a 30-4 lead. Senior Amy Ashley, who had 12 points for Jamestown (6-7) during their 49-8 win over the Lady Tigers in December, led all scorers with 11 points.

Sophomore Dawn Gorrell led Malta Bend (0-13), scoring all eight of its points and grabbing 12 rebounds. The Lady Tigers meet Bunceton on Thursday.

Boys

Moberly 72, Marshall 48

MOBERLY -- The Moberly boys' basketball team ran its NCMC winning streak to 28 games Tuesday by crushing visiting Marshall, 74-48.

It was a physical game which saw the Owls' frustration mount, both senior Nathan Cato and head coach Cody Leonard getting hit with technical fouls for questioning the rough play. The Spartans were 17 of 24 from the free-throw line during the game, including four-for-four on the technicals, while Marshall was only awarded five charity shots.

Although the Owls led 9-6 midway through the first quarter, ninth-ranked Moberly closed the frame with a 12-3 run and build their cushion to 23 points by halftime. The second half began with three straight Marshall turnovers, leading to six Spartan points.

Three-time all-state senior forward had 34 points -- including three dunks -- 15 rebounds and three blocked shots and sophomore Cory Briggs contribute 17 points for Moberly (11-5, 6-0 NCMC).

Marshall (3-14, 2-4) was topped by junior Cedrick Browder's 14 points. The Owls will be at home Friday for a Courtwarming tilt against league foe Mexico.

Glasgow 55, Santa Fe 43

SLATER -- A lot has changed for both teams since Santa Fe won an epic, four-overtime battle over Glasgow for third place in the Wildcat Classic at Slater.

The Chiefs went on to the Class 2 playoffs, but lost all five senior starters. The Yellowjackets finished third in the state in Class 1, however no longer have all-stater Jay Lee -- who hung 56 of his 2,999 career-points on Santa Fe.

As it turned out, fourth-ranked Glasgow came out on top in the graduation derby, which it proved Tuesday with a decisive 55-43 first-round tourney win over the Chiefs. The 'Jackets, aided by sophomore Dylan Yung's nine points, opened up a 13-point halftime lead and eventually stretch the margin to 21 points.

Senior Ben Meyer, a 6-foot-6 post, led Glasgow (14-1) with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Santa Fe (9-5) got eight points each from seniors Matt Lovercamp and Noah Stoll, along with sophomore Jeff Kuntz off the bench. The Chiefs will play Carrollton in Thursday's consolation semifinal.

Sweet Springs 78, Chilhowee 70

WINDSOR -- Sweet Springs erupted for 34 points during the fourth quarter Tuesday for a come-from-behind 78-70 win over Chilhowee in the first round of the Windsor Tournament.

Behind 21 points from sophomore Merced Cisneros, the Indians took a 14-point lead into the final frame. However, the Greyhounds went on a tear as senior Billy Martin tallied 13 points and seniors Nick Peeples and Zach Thomas combined for 16 more.

Cisneros wound up with a game-high 27 points for Chilhowee (7-8).

Peeples and Martin both had 19 points -- Peeples also grabbing 20 rebounds -- and Thomas logged 17 for Sweet Springs (8-7), which will take on Tipton in Thursday's semifinal.
