George Philip "Phil" Wales, 76, of Blue Springs, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Blue Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, 301 S.W. Woods Chapel Road in Blue Springs, with Rev. Karen Taylor officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Graveside services with military rites will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or University of Missouri Tiger Scholarship Fund, c/o Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. Born March 8, 1933, in Bates County, he was the son of the late R.B. and Blanche Wales. He was a 1951 graduate of Nelson High School, and in 1953 he joined the U.S. Army and served two years in the Korean War. He started working for George Will Company in 1955, which he later co-purchased and ran until he retired in 2006. He was also active in the University of Missouri Athletic Scholarship Program from 1975 to 2005.
Survivors include his two children, Kathy Abernathy of Gilbert, Ariz., and David Wales of Liberty; two stepchildren from a previous marriage, Cheryl Cooper and Jim Cooper, both of Blue Springs; six grandchildren; two brothers, Ted Wales of Gladstone and Max Wales of Marshall; one sister, Norma Morris of Marshall; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Wales and Don Wales, and two sisters, Gretchen Caton and Carmen Long.
