Hortense "Chick" Nichols, 96, of Slater, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at South Hampton Place in Columbia.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Freewill Baptist Curch in Slater, with Rev. Glen Elmore officiating. Visitation will be from noon until time of service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born Feb. 10, 1913, in Slater, she was the daughter of the late Anderson W. and Oleatha Harrison Payne. On Jan. 3, 1942, she married Francis E. "Nick" Nichols, who preceded her in death on March 24, 1980. She was an active and longtime member of St. Paul Freewill Baptist Church in Slater. She worked for many years for Dr. C. A. Burney's family, as a tour guide and greeter at Arrow Rock and retired at age 91 from the Green Thumb program.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Anderson Payne Jr., and two sisters, Opal Payne Hinshaw and Ernestine Payne Smith.
She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Johnson of Columbia, and several nieces.
