Prep Hoops Round-up: Owls closer second time out

Thursday, December 3, 2009
The Marshall boys' basketball team made its second game of the season more competitive than its opener, even against a better opponent.

Warrensburg built a big early lead and held off a late charge by the Owls during Wednesday's pool contest in the Dairy Queen/Red Cross Pharmacy Shoot-out, winning 69-61 the day after an eight-point victory over Grain Valley -- which had slugged the Birds, 88-42, the previous night.

Marshall head coach Cody Leonard said his team gave a better effort, especially on the defensive end, although it began in a 26-14 first-quarter hole when senior Tyler Schmidt hit three shots and three Tigers struck from outside.

Despite trailing by 15 points heading into the final frame, the Owls closed the gap to five points behind a combined 11 points from senior Matt Buford and junior John Lozano before running out of steam.

Senior Terence Culler scored 13 of his game-high 17 points during the second half for Warrensburg (2-0), which also got 14 points from Schmidt. The Tigers will play for the tourney title Friday against the winner of today's meeting between Hickman and Smith-Cotton.

Lozano had 16 points and four assists and Buford finished with 15 for Marshall -- which shot 45.3 percent of the field, 15 of its 24 field goals coming from the paint.

The Owls (0-2) will play Sacred Heart for fifth place Friday.

Keytesville 65, Slater 22

GLASGOW -- Keytesville used 10 free throws Wednesday to build a 20-5 lead during the first quarter of its 65-22 win over Slater in the consolation semifinal round of the Glasgow Tournament.

Senior Tyler Linneman scored eight points during the opening period, then hit three shots from the field during a 20-3 third frame to put the game away. He wound up with 13 points, while senior Brandon Drummond had 14 to pace the Tigers (1-1) -- who will play the winner of today's game between Cairo and New Franklin for the consolation trophy Friday.

Junior Jacob Brumit led the Wildcats in scoring for the second game in a row with 11 points, with junior Dee Scott pulling down 11 rebounds.

Slater (0-2) will entertain Lewis and Clark Conference rival Westran for its home opener Dec. 11.

Girls

Harrisburg 54, Slater 13

GLASGOW -- Harrisburg returned to the finals of the Glasgow Tournament to defend its title by overwhelming the Slater girls' basketball team Wednesday, 54-13.

The Lady Wildcats were unable to match the firepower of the tourney's No. 1 seed during the semifinal round. The Lady Bulldogs pulled out to a 9-2 first-quarter lead and then ran away during the second half by adding to their 14-point halftime cushion with a 22-3 spree during the third period.

Although the Purple controlled the boards by a 40-24 margin, Harrisburg had big advantages in field-goal shooting percentages (37.5-11.5), turnovers (24-6) and free-throw attempts (21-6).

Senior Ashley Fisher scored 15 points and junior Shanna Proctor added 11 for the Lady 'Dogs (2-0), who will play for the title Saturday against the winner of tonight's contest between Cairo and New Franklin.

Senior Niki Kruger and sophomore Brooke Clemons each scored four points for Slater, with Clemons collecting 13 rebounds. The Lady 'Cats (1-1) play for third place Saturday.

Agree wholeheartedly, hurdler10. We did a lot of good things to scrap our way back into shouting distance. The outside shooting came to life a bit, which is great news.

We should have some size & quickness advantages we can exploit vs. Sacred Heart. Go get a victory against the Gremlins!
