The resident received a letter and a $3,980 check from Extreme Secret Shopper of Austin, Texas, though the check was from a bank in Salina, Kan., and the postmark was Ontario, Canada. The recipient was instructed to deposit the check at the bank and then send most of the money back to the company via a Moneygram. But, $200 was to be reserved to spend as a secret shopper at Walmart, K-Mart or other department stores. After performing these duties, the recipient was promised additional funds.
Roscher said no report was filed on the incident because there was no victim in the case. And, because the letter came from overseas, "There's nothing we can really do."
He advised area residents to be sensible about these scam offers, and said he wouldn't be surprised to see them become more prevalent as the holiday season continues.
