The Shepherd's Heart: Boast in the Lord

Friday, November 20, 2009

"I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises. I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart. Come, let us tell of the Lord's greatness; let us exalt his name together." Psalm 34:1-3 (New Living Translation)

How many of us remember the last time we got a great deal on a purchase of some sort? Maybe it was that $20 recliner at the thrift store. Or maybe the $7 replacement parts that saved you from having to spend a small fortune on a new stove.

If you're like most folks, you couldn't wait to tell everyone you know about the great deal you got and what a wonderful product you had secured for such a low price. You probably boasted to your friends about the entire transaction. In fact, word of mouth is probably the best marketing tool around. When someone you know praises a person, place or thing, you immediately want to find out more about it and begin to take steps in that direction.

In Psalm 34, David says that he would not just praise the Lord, but that he would boast about Him.

The Thanksgiving season is once again upon us, and I can't think of a better way to thank our Creator for the many blessings He has provided for us than to constantly speak His praises and to boast about Him to everyone we know.

Think about what we have been given through the blood of Christ. We've gained salvation and eternal life. We've gained forgiveness for our transgressions. We have access to the throne of God through the Blood of Christ. We have been offered the ongoing ministries of the Holy Spirit -- and so much more!

We are not afraid to tell everyone we know about the awesome cleaner we found for the tile in the bathroom, or about the great get-away bed and breakfast place we stumbled across just down the road and off the beaten path, or about the great food and excellent service we discovered at that little nondescript corner café somewhere along old Route 66.

But I believe we should be telling everyone about something much more important. We have good news; the best news ever told; news that never gets old or stale or out of date; news that will endure forever.

Like King David, I think we should be telling everyone about the Lord's greatness; we should be exalting His name together.

It's high time we started boasting to our friends about God and His greatness.
