Melvin R. Barnes, 75, of Marshall, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Born February 22, 1934, in Saline County, he was the son of the late Chester R. Barnes and Mabel I. Thomas Barnes. He was a 1952 graduate of Marshall High School and served in the U.S. Navy. On Sept. 11, 1959, he married Doris L. Heuman, who survives of the home. His entire life was spent in farming and agriculture.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mary Malan and husband, David, of rural Clinton, Beverly Puckett and husband, John, of Independence; one son, Gary Barnes of Independence; one grandson; three step-granddaughters; eight step-great-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Chester L. Barnes of rural Marshall; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Curtner.
