Byron L. Kitchen, 95, of Slater, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at Big Bend Retreat in Slater.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at Slater United Methodist Church. Visitation was held prior to the service at the church. Rev. Jess Spurgin and Matt Arni officiated. Bethany Weiker, organist, accompanied Kayla Durham as she sang "Amazing Grace." Weiker accompanied the congregation in singing "When the Roll is Called up Yonder" and "Heavenly Sunlight." Burial was in Slater City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Seth Tyre, Bud Summers, Joel Clements, Robert Blanton, Ben Frazee, Ron Bledsoe and Jack Anderson. Memorials are suggested to Slater United Methodist Church or The Gideons International, care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born Dec. 17, 1913, in Saline County, he was the son of the late Cromwell C. and Ida Bell Smith Kitchen. On Sept. 4, 1954, in Slater he married Mafalda V. "Sandra" Galizi, who preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1985. He was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church. He was a retired farmer and had served for many years as a member of the Slater Co-op #1 board of directors.
He is survived by one sister, Ido Lewellen of Slater, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Kitchen, Wallace Kitchen and Rufus Kitchen; and three sisters, Susie Gilliam, Katherine Hitaffer and Ruby Anderson.
