Boyfriend arrested for stealing car

Monday, November 16, 2009
Bailey S. Trent-Kettlekamp, 23, of Dittmer, was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 10, and charged with class C felony tampering with a motor vehicle, following a report the vehicle had been stolen from a Marshall woman.

Trent-Kettlekamp is being held at Saline County Justice Facility on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

The theft was reported Wednesday, Nov. 11, by the vehicle's owner, who said she believed Trent-Kettlekamp, her boyfriend, had stolen the yellow 2003 Pontiac Sunfire.

Marshall police received a call about noon from a cashier of a Marshall gas station that a yellow vehicle had driven away without paying for gasoline pumped into the car. Shortly after that report, police say, they received an anonymous tip that the vehicle was on U.S. Highway 65 heading toward Walmart.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located the empty vehicle. Video surveillance footage of the parking lot allowed officers to obtain a photo of the driver's face as he exited the vehicle.

Police then received a call from residents of the 1600 block of West College Street, who reported there was a "muddy man" who exited a wooded area and "looked suspicious," according to the report.

When police arrived at the residence, they saw a man matching both the caller's description and the photograph obtained from the Walmart surveillance footage standing in the backyard of the residence. When police searched his person, they found the stolen vehicle's keys.

Following his arrest, Trent-Kettlekamp told officers there was a current warrant for his arrest in Jefferson County, on charges he used dust remover to get "high." Officers found 25 cans of dust remover in the vehicle, according to the report.

If convicted, Trent-Kettlekamp could be sentenced to seven years in Missouri Department of Corrections, or up to one year in county jail, and/or up to a $5,000 fine.

He is not yet scheduled for a court appearance.

Charges contained in reports provided by law enforcement officials are not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting charges must be presented before a jury, whose duty is to determine if the accused is guilty or not guilty of the charges.
