RICHMOND -- Marshall junior Katie Wells won her third gold medal of the cross country season Thursday at the Richmond Invitational.
Wells covered the course in 21:04 for a six-second victory over junior Asabe O'Neill of Notre Dame de Sion in Kansas City. The Storm had two full squads entered and took the top two spots in the team standings with 60 and 64 points, while the Lady Owls (130 points) placed fourth.
Sophomore Arozo Shahabad (23:25) also medaled for Marshall by coming in 20th. Rounding out the Lady Owls' scoring were sophomore Lauren McGrath (24:00) in 33rd, junior Stormy Morrison (24:07) 37th and freshman Sam Wells (25:42) in 58th place in the 78-runner field.
An illness which kept senior Patrick Todd from running prevented the Marshall boys from entering a full team, but they wound up with three medals.
Junior Nick Jenkins (20:01) was 16th among 83 entries, with seniors Henry Yeagle (20:28) and Keeper Kays (20:37) 23rd and 25th respectively. Junior Jeremy Jalilvand (20:55) also showed well in 33rd place.
Platte County had four of the top seven harriers to take the team title with 27 points, but West Platte senior Will Wilson (18:35) won the race.
The times were consistently slower than a year earlier due to the wet conditions on the course. The meet also ran late due to the MRVC Championships held earlier in the afternoon, shortening the junior varsity races to 2.2 miles. The Owls' only medalist was sophomore Michael McNelly (15:18), 13th out of 68 runners.
Marshall will compete in the Class 3, District 5 Championships, to be held Saturday at Moberly.
