Mack A. McWhirter, 89, of Slater, died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at Lutheran Nursing Home in Concordia.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Slater, with Pastor Mark Hass officiating. Bethany Weiker, organist, will accompany Sharla Webb as she sings "In the Garden" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee." Weiker will also play "How Great Thou Art." Burial with military honors will be in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. Pallbearers will be Shane McWhirter, Jarrod McWhirter, Lance McWhirter, Jeff Hammond, Bud Summers, Tom Martin, Wayne Wise and Brian Treece. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Sweigart, Jim Mendenhall, Beno Messer, Roland Hardwick, Glen Sullivan and Harold Morton. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, John Knox Village Hospice or Lutheran Nursing Home in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born Dec. 8, 1919, in Kansas City, he was the son of the late Fred and Ruby Cahill McWhirter. On Nov. 20, 1948, in Eldon, he married Virginia Lueck, who survives of the home. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Slater. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a life member of VFW Post 4367 in Slater and a member of American Legion Post 78 in Slater. He worked for Blakemore & Douglas Trucking and retired after 26 years of service with Slater Special Road District.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Steve McWhirter of Lee's Summit and Dean McWhirter of Slater; one daughter, Katherine Clay of Green City; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Margurite Witcher, and one grandson, Greg McWhirter.
