On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Marshall Mayor Connie Latimer signed a proclamation declaring the month of October as National Disability Employment Awareness month. Both Marshall Habilitation Center employees and consumers were present at the event.

The U.S. Department of Labor has declared the month's theme to be "Expectation + Opportunity = Full Participation." More locally, the Missouri Developmental Disabilities Employment Team works for "community-integrated employment options" for all workers.

The month "is intended to urge employers, as they seek to fill positions, to embrace the richness of America's diversity by considering the talents of all workers, including workers with disabilities," Hab Center employees said in a press release.

This raises the question of how many people with a certified disability are gainfully employed in local commerce.

Do you suppose the mayor's office, or another city department, maintains such information?
